FOTD & Review of TBN Blackened Violet

8 Dec

SAM_0373Two Christmases ago I purchased a few samples from The Body Needs’ Blackened Collection. I’m not a huge smoky eye girl, so I’m just now getting around to using them. I opted for loose shadow, but TBN also sells BV pressed into a 26mm pan or a “crush pot” – NOT to be confused with Coastal Scents’ “hot pots,” LOL! The sample size costs about $2 and is about 1/2 tablespoon of loose e/s encased in a 0.5 gram sifter jar. This is the perfect size for someone who is interested, but not willing to make a commitment to the full size product.

What’s interesting about BV is that it takes on a different cast depending on what color base you use underneath the pigment. See for yourself…

Although the price & packaging of Blackened Violet are great, I was pretty underwhelmed by the actual performance of the product. I felt that I had to pack it on to get a decent color payoff and found that it had a lot of fallout. The color is so dark that you’ll need makeup remover or a wet wipe to keep from looking like you have dark circles under your eye or you got TKO’ed last night! I also discovered that blending out Blackened Violet will remove most of the shimmer, which is what makes it so pretty in the swatches on my hand. I even used a metallic base to help the shimmer translate, but the finished product was quite demure. For that reason, this s e/s was a fail for me (Overall score: 4). But if you’re in the market for a blackish-purplish e/s with a little bit of shimmer, then this may be the one for you. *kanye shrug* ONTO the FOTD…

Weekend shenanigans & FOTD: Soft Sable

I went to the movies & had dinner at Panera Bread Co with my mama (she’s the best)! I absolutely LOVE scary movies, so we saw The Woman in Black. My thoughts? It wasn’t nearly as scary as it could or should have been (hence the rating of PG-13) *YAWN* As I sat in the theater munching on my contraband trail mix (because movie theater snacks are ridiculously expensive & high in both fat & sodium) I noticed that there was an overabundance of people half my age, giggling, play-fighting & playing musical chairs all up in the theater. What the &*%@?! We purposefully attended the matinée show to take advantage of the lower-priced tickets & the vacant stadium seating, but no… the darn TEENAGERS were there to see their beloved Harry Potter all grown up. I feel so old right now. *SIGHS* Anyway, I’ve been experimenting with smoky eyes lately & this is what I came up with…Subtlety is not my strong suit, but today’s look is a simple, dark brown smoky eye. The flash from my camera made the brown appear lighter than it did in person. This is a more accurate depiction. My shiny happy wig is the result of finger coils, created using KCKT & organic extra virgin coconut oil. Do you see those 2 twists on the right side? That hair WILL. NOT. COIL. I don’t know why, but no amount of  baby talk, gel, water, kind words, conditioner, oil or sweet nothings will make that hair curl. *WHOMP WHOMP*

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I applied matte dark brown from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette over my entire lower eyelid. On my crease I used matte brown from the CoverGirl Coffee Shop palette (a slightly lighter shade than the first one). For a softer, more natural look, I used Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep on my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows & L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline & waterline with Wet N Wild cream liner in black.

CHEEKS: Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

        Overall score: 6

The Wet N Wild Spoiled Brat trio consists of a frost-finish silver, a matte-finish black w/ silver glitter & a magenta-colored e/s in a satin finish.  Although I did not personally purchase this palette (it was a gift), it only costs $3! And that’s the regular price… what a steal! I have nothing good or bad to say about the packaging (hence the score of 5). In terms of efficacy I could only muster a 6. Why? You can get sparkly black or frosty silver e/s just about anywhere, but the promise of pink is what draws most people to purchase this palette. Ironically, the pink one was the poorest performing shadow of this trio. It’s less pigmented than the other shadows, it shows up darker than it appears in the pan & it has a lot of fallout during application. I’m not saying that it’s not worth buying… just don’t expect to be amazed by this pink. The black & silver e/s are both very pigmented, so I would recommend this palette. However if you already own these three colors there’s no need purchase Spoiled Brat.

Celeb Looks: The Cynthia Bailey Smoky Eye

10 Feb

I’m one of those annoying people who comment the aesthetic appearance of cast members when I watch a tv show or movie. I can’t help myself, it’s a disease… LOL! Cynthia Bailey’s face is so BEAT! Whenever I watch the Real Housewives of Atlanta, I get emotional over her makeup. Her signature look is a smoky eye that incorporates shades of gray, brown or blue. See for yourself…

Guess who’s a spokeswoman/model for Fashion Fair Cosmetics?

This song was HOT during my freshman year in college, LMBO! I know the video is awesomely bad, but admit that the music gets you in a “rock” mood. I had forgotten all about this song until I heard it in a Samsung commercial last week. TOO FUNNY! Anyway… let’s talk makuep! Today’s look is pretty simple, I didn’t wanna draw too much attention to my eyes, so I did a simple smoky look that allows the bright pink lipstick to pop.

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I applied this dark pewter (metallic finish) from the Wet N Wild Lust palette over my entire lower eyelid. On my crease I used matte dark brown from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette, then I used matte peach e/s (WNW Greed palette) to highlight my brow bone area.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows & L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline & waterline with Wet N Wild cream liner in black.

CHEEKS: Wet N Wild blush in Heather Silk

LIPS: Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color in Fuchsia Fever + CO Bigelow lip gloss in Pink Mint

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

I received a friendly reminder that I haven’t been posting FOTDs lately… Sorry guys! The product reviews & acquisitions & Giovanni have kept me pretty busy. Speaking of Giovanni… My hair is day 3 of a twist-out. It looked a ham this particular morning, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to test out the banana clip faux-hawk. No gel on the sides this time, just a little Mane-N-Tail Leave-In conditioner before brushing it back. I excluded the hair in front from the banana clip, to give me a bang. Here’s the side view…
