Is PJ-ism hereditary?!

31 Jul

I went to visit my mother last weekend & in my usual fashion, I snooped around her bedroom & bathroom looking for stuff to… umm, er, uh… “borrow” & BEHOLD *trumpets sound* I found some new makeup & hair products! I stormed into the kitchen (hands on hips) & demanded to know why she hadn’t told me about these new cosmetics. She just rolled her eyes & laughed at me! (C’MON MOM) At least she agreed to review her acquisitions for Sham I am Glam, so that I could share with you 🙂

Creme of Nature Argan Oil Gloss & Shine Mist is a superfine mist with instant, weightless shine & great frizz control. Formulated with UV protectants, it helps guard hair from environmental damage & conditions. It is perfect for daily use.

Mom bought it for about $7 @ her local BSS. She sprays a bit on her hair (prior to curling) to add shine to her silver locks.

Palmer’s Olive Oil Formula Glossing Hair Mousse is a creamy, moisturizing foam specially formulated with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Vitamin E to give hair volume, hold & healthy shine. An alcohol-free, non-drying formula that leaves hair manageable with extra bounce, body & sheen.

Mom bought it for about $5 @ her local BSS. She plans to use it as a wrapping foam on hairwashing day. In case you were wondering: Yes! my mama is a permie… well, FOR NOW anyway.

Maybelline Super Stay Makeup is a liquid foundation that touts flexible, breathable, all-day comfort. It can withstand heat, sweat & humidity w/ zero-transfer (it won’t rub off). Its oil free, so it won’t clog your pores & is suitable for all skin types.

She bought a bottle in “Cocoa” from CVS for about $10. (NOTE: she hasn’t used it yet)

L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder claims to precisely match your skin’s tone & texture. Its micro-fine powder provides versatile coverage, so you can blot shine, blend for a natural finish, or build for more coverage. The formula now contains a hint of pearl pigments that enhance your skin’s tone. Applicator & mirror inside.

Although Mom hasn’t used it yet, I can personally vouch for this pressed powder. I have used it for several years & plan to go back to it as soon as I finish this Estee Lauder pressed powder compact, LOL. My L’Oreal True Match color is Nut Brown (C7), Mom’s is Cocoa (C8). This compact costs about $8 at CVS.

Doesn’t this make you wonder if genetics play a part in my PJ-ism?! LOL

FOTD: The Pink Avenger

16 Jun

After I see a hero movie (such as X-Men, Spiderman, Superman) I always ask people “if you could have any super power, what would it be?” I can never pick just one, so these are my super powers of choice:

  1. The ability to fly… cuz planes are waaay faster than trains!
  2. The ability to become invisible (at will)… on days when I don’t wanna be bothered, I can just vanish!

How exactly am I supposed to save the world using these self-motivated super powers!??! *crickets chirping* I guess that’s why God made me regular…LOL

TANGENTIAL COMMENTARY: Have you ever seen the show Lie to Me? It comes on Fox. It’s about a behavioral analyst team who can detect whether or not someone is lying just by reading their facial expressions, gestures, ticks & body language. They use the powers of observation & deductive reasoning to help solve crimes. Now that’s a REAL LIFE super power I wouldn’t mind having!!!

*Now back to the regularly scheduled programming*

Naturally, I would wanna be called “Super Sham,” but then I remembered no hero ever uses his/her government name, so I chose the moniker “The Pink Avenger”…

<—— And this would be my cape…

And instead of a mask, I would wear some EYE-POPPING, PINK shadow like this  ——>

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cherry

SHADOW: On the inner half of my lower eyelid I used matte bubblegum pink & I faded that into magenta on my outer lid (Shany 120 palette)… then I applied sparkly black e/s (WNW Greed palette) to my crease using my Coastal Scents crease brush. I used matte peach to fill in the space between my crease & my brow bone… & off-white to brighten my tearducts (also WNW Greed palette).

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline with Wet N Wild cream eyeliner in black. On my waterline, I used Ulta glitter eyeliner pencil in Silver.

LIPS: Carmex +  “Stop Violence in the Home” lip gloss by The Body Shop

CHEEKS: Wet N Wild Blush in “Heather Silk”

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

FOTD: Inspired by Ariel

12 Jun

When I was a little girl, I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid! I had my own VHS to take to daycare so we could watch it after school & everything! My friend’s 4 yr old niece is having an “Under the Sea” themed birthday party this summer, so I asked her what child born since the millennium knows about Ariel & friends?!? She told me that Disney re-released this movie. Ummm…YAY! I’m elated at the prospect of showing one of my childhood favorites to my (future) children on DVD… although my mother does still have that old VHS, just in case! LOL

You know those days when you walk into your closet & feel like you have nothing to wear? Well this was one of those days for me. When I’m feeling this way, I usually end up doing my makeup first, then choosing an outfit & that’s exactly what I did today. The base color for this FOTD is a frost-finish, iridescent, aqua-colored eyeshadow by CoverGirl called Aqua Paradise. The green/aqua blue color shift of this shadow reminds me of fish scales (or in Ariel’s case, mermaid scales). To mimic her ginger-toned hair, I mixed orange & red eyeshadows from my Shany 120 palette & applied that to my crease. Keep reading for the rest of the details…

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Rocky Mountain Green (lower lid)

SHADOW: I covered my entire lower lid in Aqua Paradise (CoverGirl).  I applied matte orange & red e/s from the Shany 120 palette to my crease, dark brown to deepen my outer v, matte camel on my browbone & matte off white to highlight my tearducts (all from the WNW Vanity palette).

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline with WetnWild cream eyeliner in black. On my waterline I used WetNWild eyeliner pencil in turquoise & turquoise-colored e/s from Shany 120 palette.

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

CHEEKS: Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey (8305B)

LIPS: Carmex + Estee Lauder lip gloss in Rose

FOTD: Like there’s no tomorrow…

23 May

IDK about you, but I woke up knowing that 5/21/2011 @ 6pm (Eastern) couldn’t possibly be the rapture (click here for more info)… And since my salvation is already squared away & whatnot, I decided to do a funky look that I would have previously been too afraid to try! Hope you enjoy 🙂

Tip of the day: If you’re not already doing so, start living like there’s no tomorrow… today!

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: Raspberry-colored cream eyeshadow from Claire’s 24  palette (on my lower lid) & WNW turquoise eyeliner on my crease

SHADOW: On my tear ducts I used golden yellow & I blended that into tangerine orange… then I blended the orange into magenta (all from Shany 120 palette). I drew a line around my crease & outer v with the turquoise WNW pencil. Then using a crease brush, I blended the line & added turquoise eyeshadow to the crease & outer v. As always, I used matte camel from WNW Vanity on my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline with WetnWild cream eyeliner in black. On my waterline I repeated the turquoise eyeliner & eyeshadow from my eyelid for continuity.

LIPS: Carmex + “Stop Violence in the Home” lip gloss by The Body Shop

CHEEKS: Ulta single e/s in Sparks in the hollows of my cheeks & Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey (8305B) on the apples of my cheeks

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

FOTD: Captivated by coquelicot

19 May

Champ de coquelicots

Captivated by WHAT?! I know, I know… lemmie explain. I’m a makeup junkie on the outside & a word nerd on the inside. I have a healthy vocabulary & don’t often learn new words, so it’s SUPER EXCITING to me when I do. In case you hadn’t figured it out, my word of the day is coquelicot!!! *Claps hands & does dance* Coquelicot (pronounced kah-klee-ko) is an orangey shade of red that is named after the french word for “poppy”… awesome, huh? I knew you’d like it 🙂

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: Bronze-colored cream shadow from the Claire’s 24 palette

SHADOW: On my tear ducts I used a matte golden orange from the Shany Cosmetics 120 e/s palette. I blended that into an orangey-red (Shany 120) on the center of my lower lid, then I used matte dark brown (WNW Vanity) to deepen my crease & outer v. I also used matte off white (WNW Vanity) to highlight my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lash line with WetnWild Cream eyeliner in Black. For my waterline, I drew a thin line using a turquoise eyeliner pencil (WNW), then I topped it with aqua eyeshadow (Shany 120). Didja notice that I curled my lashes today? 🙂

LIPS: Carmex & L’Oreal HIP lip gloss in Inviting

CHEEKS: Ulta single e/s in Sparks

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

Tip of the day: Clock it!

11 May

This tip of the day was inspired by a FB dialogue I had with one of my friends this morning. She finds herself waking up extra early so that she can do her makeup before work. I used to have this problem myself; there didn’t seem to be enough time for a my makeup & hair in addition to normal morning things (such as bathing, ironing my clothes & eating breakfast, LOL). So last December I asked Santa for a wall clock & I mounted it directly next my vanity in the bathroom(slightly above eye level, cuz I’m only 5’3) . It still takes me about 100 minutes to get ready for work, but now I have my eye on the clock the entire time. If you’re a perfectionist (like me :()… stop running late everywhere & buy yourself a clock! Time management will also help you measure your dexterity in a particular task. Case in point: it used to take me 60 minutes to roll my hair (wet) & now I can do it in 35. I know I’m a deft & speedy roller setter because of… MY BELOVED CLOCK!

This is my Better Homes & Gardens 10″ Scroll Wall Clock from Walmart 🙂 Ain’t it cute?

Happy Mother’s Day!

8 May

I would be remiss if I didn’t take the time to acknowledge this special day! So, whether you’re a surrogate mom, adoptive mom, godmother, grandmother, auntie, or my personal favorite: a future mom, Happy Mother’s Day to you!

What’d you guys do for your moms this weekend?

My brother & I went home for the weekend to kick it with momz. He took us out to the movies & even cooked us Sunday dinner! BTW, you must see the new Madea movie… it was really good (BYREEE- *takes breath*-EEEEEN!)

Confessions of a product junkie…

4 May

Every single time I go shopping, whether it’s for groceries or clothes I feel the need to browse the beauty aisle(s). Whether I’m at Walmart, Target, Rite-Aid, Dillard’s, TJMaxx… I just gotta know what they have to offer in the way of beauty products.  My disease is called product junkism. Maybe you’ve heard of it, or perhaps you suffer from it yourself…? IDK about you, but my PJ-ism always seems to flare up around the same time I get the Ulta sale paper in the mail. Have you been to Ulta?!? It’s my version of heaven. I swear I can hear the hallelujah chorus performing when I step in the building. So I just wanted to share with you the acquisitions from my most recent trip to Ulta… ENJOY!

Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Replenishing Mask

Ingredients: Water/Eau, Bis-Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Stearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Fragrance/Parfum, Benzyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Panthenol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Sodium Hydroxide, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone.

I know exactly what you’re thinking: Sham you have gone off the deep end! This DC is neither natural nor Curly Girl approved (dimethicone… HELLO)! I know, you guys, I know. But the bottom line is that I need a new DC Mask… I’m scraping the bottom of my numero uno (pictured below) & I haven’t been able to find a jar ANYWHERE! Grrr @ Pantene! The two have a few common ingredients & I’ll try just about anything once. It smells divine & it only cost me $5 @ Ulta, which means it’s probably $4 @ Walmart. I plan to use it this week, so I’ll keep you posted & let you know what I think.

But my favorite DC is Pantene Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Breakage Defense Deep Conditioning Mask

Ingredients: Water, Stearyl Alchohol, Amdimethicone, Behentrimonium Choride, Cety alcohol, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil, Panthenol, Pathenyl ethyl ether, Fragrance, Lysine hcl, Methyl tyrosinate hcl, Histidine, Benzyl alcohol, Disodium edta, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium hydroxide.

What else did I buy @ Ulta?

Orly Top 2 Bottom: Two-in-one Basecoat/Topcoat & a handy-dandy buffer block. I plan to do a DIY pedi this weekend 🙂

What will you buy on your next trip to Ulta?

Sham Newton… still a girl @ heart

29 Apr

I was wearing this college tee the other day (WAR EAGLE BABY) & this lady approached me & asked if I knew her daughter. I asked her the daughter’s name & when she graduated & she told me that her daughter was still in school… a junior, majoring in architecture & industrial design. I laughed & told her that I graduated five years ago… It was then that I realized that I am getting old!!! *GASP* How could this have happened to me? And how are children born in the 90s suddenly grown?!?!?… And why does this clairol-resistant patch of gray hairs seem to be multiplying in the crown of my head? *SIGH* Well at least I got paid today… can I get a “what what”!?!

Hey! Didja hear my former boo, Cam Newton was the first pic of the 2011 NFL draft? The Carolina Panthers better be good to him. I may actually start watching NFL football now, but don’t hold me to that. I wish Cam the best & he will always be a Tiger in my heart!

Didja see Prince William’s wedding this morning? One of my besties actually got up at 4:30 to watch it… Catherine Middleton was a beautiful bride, but I need my beauty rest. Do you remember back when Will was hot? Today I realized that he’s also starting to look old. I wonder if he saw that bald spot in the mirror & felt the same way I did…LOL! Anyway, I’m happy for the two of them & I love what their union represents… Namely: dreams do come true, princes & princesses still exist & apparently NOT all men who string things along for nine years are unwilling to get married.

This morning I made a mad dash to the courthouse to renew my tag/vehicle registration & was aided by possibly the surliest woman in the entire county. Being the last day of the month, it was pretty busy, but it was like 8:30am on a FRIDAY & all my documents were in order. How can you be mad this early in the day? And she got paid today too!!! If that ain’t something to smile about, IDK what is. I was still polite to her & thanked her for her assistance before I walked away, cuz that’s how I roll. But when I left the courthouse I had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude, because I actually like my job & enjoy helping people. In addition to that, it enables me to keep a roof over my head, food in my belly & makeup on my face… WOOT WOOT! I hope you have a Happy Friday 🙂

What a day!

27 Apr

This is my first official post! What a day it has been… tornadoes, power outages & damage… And here I sit on the floor, in the hallway waiting for it all to pass… Say a prayer 😉
