Winter 2014 Hair Update

LOVES the volume after a fresh wash!

LOVES the volume after a fresh wash!

I’ve recently received a few inquiries about my Winter 2014 hair regimen. Here’s what I’ve been doing this winter to keep my wig looking right.

STEP 1 – Wipe the slate clean…

  • (Biweekly) I scratch my¬†scalp & shampoo my hair,
  • Deep condition & detangle,
  • Put on a plastic bag & sit under hooded dryer (on low heat)¬†for about 15 minutes,
  • Rinse conditioner¬†out w/ cold water,
  • Wrap a t-shirt around my hair (in a turban fashion)¬†to dry

STEP 2 – Roller Set…

  • I spray a light mist of TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray
  • I mix Mango-scented Shea Butter & The Body Shop Macadamia straightening balm¬†& apply it to each section of hair. This smoothes & seals my cuticles, minimizing my friz.¬†I know what you’re gonna say… “Sham hasn’t that product been discontinued?” And my reponse would be “Yes, it has!” However, since¬†2011 I have bought several bottles from various eBay retailers, so I intend to keep using it until I can no longer replenish my stash! ūüėČ
  • I apply my FAVORITE leave-in solution (a 50/50 mix of H2O & African-Pride Leave-In Conditioner) to each section of hair before rolling it up.
  • I sit under my hooded dryer, alternating between low & high heat until my wig is completely dry. This process generally takes about 2 hours.
  • I remove the rollers & use a paddle brush to wrap my hair before tying it down & going to sleep.

STEP 3 – Style…

  • After removing my scarf, I mist a little bit of shine spray, then fluff & seperate my curls.
  • I smoothe my edges using a touch of Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade (as needed).

STEP 4 – Maintain…

  • Nighttime routine: I alternate between wrapping & dry rolling my hair
  • On rainy days, like today, I bun it up to keep it stretched & to prevent my curls from reverting.

    My rainy day bun

BOTTOM LINE: My 2014 hair regimen isn’t at that different from that of two years ago. The main difference is that I use a bit less heat now. Whereas before I was ALL ABOUT straightening my roots, I have chilled out with that. My hair is longer than it was back then, so it actually hangs differently. In a nutshell, longer hair = more¬†elongated curls, so when you add flat-ironed your roots to the equation, you end up with ZERO volume ūüė¶ Additionally, actively sectioning &¬†straightening curly/puffy roots is¬†time consuming, I prefer more passive methods of acheiving smooth edges.¬†For me, the¬†tension from wrapping and/or bunning my hair is usually just enough to give the appearance of a sleek hairline.

What are you doing this winter to keep your wig looking tight?

FOTD: Classic Makeup

30 Dec

¬†Sometimes you just wanna wear makeup without looking extremely made up.¬†This is one of those looks…

SAM_03922The key to pulling off your own classic makeup look is to find neutral eyeshadows that complement your skin tone. Whether you’re ivory, caramel or mahogany complected, look for shadows that are within¬†2 shades of YOUR foundation or pressed powder. Use a combination of lighter & darker colors to create depth on your eyelid. Hey! If you prefer, you can even use your pressed powder as an eyeshadow.¬†And finish does matter! While there’s nothing wrong with using frosty and/or shimmery shadows to re-create this FOTD, I believe¬†that eyeshadows with matte finish¬†will produce the most natural-looking results.¬†¬†They tend to give you that airbrushed, flawless look that will make people question whether or not you’re wearing makeup. *cues Beyonc√©* Here’s what I did to create my classic FOTD…

Weekend shenanigans & FOTD: Soft Sable

13 Feb

I went to the movies & had dinner at Panera Bread Co with my mama (she’s the best)! I absolutely LOVE scary movies, so we saw The Woman in Black. My thoughts? It wasn’t nearly as scary as it could or should have been (hence the rating of PG-13) *YAWN*¬†As I sat in the theater munching on my contraband trail mix¬†(because movie theater¬†snacks are¬†ridiculously expensive & high in both fat & sodium) I noticed that there was an overabundance of people half¬†my age, giggling, play-fighting & playing musical chairs all up¬†in the theater. What the &*%@?! We purposefully attended¬†the matin√©e show to take advantage of the lower-priced tickets & the vacant stadium seating, but no… the darn TEENAGERS were there to see their beloved Harry Potter all grown up. I feel so old right now. *SIGHS* Anyway, I’ve been experimenting with smoky eyes lately & this is what I came up with…Subtlety is not my strong suit, but today’s look is a simple, dark brown smoky eye. The flash from my camera made the brown appear lighter¬†than it did in person. This is a more accurate depiction. My shiny happy wig is the result of finger coils, created using KCKT & organic extra virgin coconut oil. Do you see those 2 twists on the right side? That hair WILL. NOT. COIL. I don’t know why, but no amount of¬† baby talk, gel, water, kind words, conditioner, oil or sweet nothings¬†will make that hair curl. *WHOMP¬†WHOMP*

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I applied matte dark brown from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette over my entire lower eyelid. On my crease I used matte brown from the CoverGirl Coffee Shop palette (a slightly lighter shade than the first one). For a softer, more natural look, I used Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep on my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows & L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline & waterline with Wet N Wild cream liner in black.

CHEEKS: Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

FOTD: A brown smoky eye

4 Nov

This FOTD is a recreation of my makeup in the Knot Today product review. Every woman needs a go-to neutral look! They’re so simple. Case in point: this look was created using only shadows from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette. But y’all know how much I LOVE color, so today my POP of color was¬†Green Shimmer HD gel liner by Ruby Kisses; it’s a dark green w/ flecks of gold glitter.

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Black Bean (on the outer half of my eyelids)

SHADOW: I covered my entire lower eyelid in shimmery brown e/s. Then I used matte dark brown e/s to darken my outer v & matte camel to highlight brow bone. Finally I used frosty champagne to highlight my tearducts, as well as the arches of my eyebrow. ALL shadows used in this look are from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette.

OTHER DETAILS‚Ķ I used CoverGirl¬†single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. Maybelline Volume Express ‚ÄúFalsies‚ÄĚ Mascara¬†in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined¬†my upper lashline with Wet n Wild¬†cream eyeliner in black & my waterline with Ruby Kisses HD gel liner in “green shimmer”.

CHEEKS: I used Ulta¬†single e/s in ‚ÄúSparks‚ÄĚ on the hollows of my cheeks & ¬†Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey on the apples of my cheeks.

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

Stay tuned for a video tutorial of this look…

FOTD: Ode to Vanity

21 May

Oh, how I love my WetNWild “Vanity” eyeshadow palette!!!

IDK how I ever¬†lived without it. ¬†I’ve used it almost everyday since I made it mine! Okay, okay¬†enough blubberin’… on to THE MAKEUP! For this FOTD I decided to keep my it pretty simple because¬†I was wearing a lot of bright colors… that & we were running late for worship service that day¬†*church finger* ūüėČ Anyway, if you are interested in color exploration, but wanna take baby steps, this look is a great way to get it started: a neutral eye with a bold waterline.

PRIMER:Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk (lower lid) & Purple (crease)

SHADOW: On lower lid & browbone I used camel colored e/s from WetNWild Vanity palette (matte finish). I drew a line on my crease using the NYX pencil in Purple & put chocolate-brown from the CoverGirl Coffee Shop e/s palette on top of that line using a crease brush. I added matte white e/s to highlight my tearducts & matte black e/s to darken the outer v (both Shany).

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline with WetnWild cream eyeliner in black.

LIPS: Carmex + Estee Lauder lip gloss in Rose

CHEEKS: WetNWild Blush in ‚ÄúHeather Silk‚ÄĚ (on the apples of my cheeks)

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

Behold the awesomeness of the Vanity palette!!!

Since I¬†mention this palette daily, I figured I should at least show it to you, right?! Let’s discuss…¬† the top 2 colors are excellent highlighters (i.e. tearduct & browbone), one is matte off white, one is a frosty champagne. The 2 on the middle row are good all-over-your-lid colors; matte camel (the one I use errday!) & a metallic yellow gold. *LOVES THIS*¬† The bottom row features a matte coffee bean brown & a metallic chocolate-brown, both are great for contouring & shading the outer v. Overall the Vanity palette is a great find, with neutral tones¬†that will compliment¬†any¬†complexion & you can’t beat the price ($5)! You can get WetNWild products @ Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid & Winn-Dixie… I live in central Alabama, so your local retailers may differ.

FOTD: Meek & Mild

5 May

You kinda hafta know me in order to find humor in the title of this FOTD. People might call me “Meek” from time to time,¬†but it’s not¬†the most accurate word to describe my temperament (LOL). Anywho, I have decided to add some neutral looks to the S.I.A.G. repertoire. Hope you enjoy!

The story behind my mystery palette: I got a bunch of makeup for Christmas awhile back & since I already had so much, I decided to save this one for a rainy day. Well 2 years later I was visiting my mom & I found it in my bedroom @ her house, sans packaging, so I have no idea what brand it is or who makes it. But I like it! *kanye shrug* NOTE: Since the names of the colors are unknown, I will assign numbers to them (ES1 – ES20), starting in the top left corner going from left to right & top to bottom.

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I covered my entire lower lid in ES13 (rosy taupe) & darkened my crease with ES9 (purplish taupe). Then I used ES3 to highlight my tearducts & matte camel (WetNWild Vanity) from my the edge of the crease up to the browbone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline with WetnWild Cream eyeliner in black & lined my waterline with a WetnWild Eyeliner Pencil in black.

LIPS: Carmex + ‚ÄúStop Violence in the Home‚ÄĚ lip gloss¬†by The Body Shop‚Ķ¬†I think I’m addicted to the¬†pink sparkles *SMH*

CHEEKS:¬†WetNWild Blush in ‚ÄúHeather Silk‚ÄĚ (on the apples of my cheeks)

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)
