DIY lipstick repair

21 Nov

thalia nyx cosmeticsIf you watched my Update/2013 HG vlog, then you know that this year I fell in LOVE with NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in Thalia. It’s a brownish-pink shade, with a satiny finish. It can be applied sheerly with a little bit of gloss, or layered heavily for the full impact of the color… whichever floats your boat.

So one fine day I inadvertently left Thalia in my car. I took it out & allowed it to “rest” for 24 hours before using it again, hoping that it would solidify at its base. No such luck. A few days later, it broke off mid-stoke. Fortunately for Thalia, I  was able to catch her before she fell to her doom. And because I love her so, I continuted to use her BOOTLEG & ALL. Then a few days ago I decided enough was enough & I had to do something different.

Now I know what you’re thinking… “Sham Thalia costs $4.00, just buy another one!” And if I didn’t live 45-60 minutes away from the nearest Ulta, I probably would have. Instead I decided to salvage the remaining lipstick by de-tubing it, placing it in a jar & being applying it with a lip brush. Until I remembered that I already owned a color almost identical to Thalia. *SMH… this is a PJ moment* Seriously though, do y’all remember Trendy Mauve by Lancome? I reviewed it here last year. Well Trendy Mauve & Thalia are… TWINSIES 😉

Random Awesomeness… The Betty Crocker Edition

10 Nov

Over the last few years I’ve been honing my culinary prowess. I’m not exactly TOP CHEF material yet, but I’m putting y’all on notice, Sham can burn a lil sumn. In support of my endeavors, my stupendous team bought me a KitchenAid® Artisan® Series 5-Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer!!! (I said that last phrase in my Oprah voice, in case you were wondering) And without further do, here is my CANOPY GREEN mixer, in all its glorious splendor…

mixerAnd in retribution for their generous gift I made them these cupcakes…

And because I love you… I am sharing the recipe 😉

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cake

  • 1 (18.25 oz) package of chocolate (or devil’s food) cake mix
  • 1 (3.9 oz) package of Jell-O® instant chocolate pudding mix (again the chocolate fudge, devil’s food flavors will also work just fine)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 eggs (room temperature)
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease & flour cake pan.
  2. Combine ingredients & beat until smooth. Stir in chocolate chips & pour into baking pan.
  3. Baking times vary depending on the size of your pan, but a bundt pan will take 1 hour; 2 nine-inch round pans take about 30 minutes and cupcakes pans take about 20 minutes to cook. You can test their readiness by sticking a clean toothpick through the middle of the pan. If it comes out free of cake batter, then you’re in good shape. Be mindful that melted chocolate on the toothpick could just mean that you poked a chocolate chip.
  4. Allow to cool before frosting.

Peanut Butter Frosting

  • ½ cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 3 tbsp milk (as needed)
Place the butter and peanut butter into a medium bowl, and beat with an electric mixer. Gradually mix in the sugar, and when it starts to get thick, incorporate milk one tablespoon at a time until all of the sugar is mixed in and the frosting is thick and spreadable. Beat for at least 3 minutes for it to get good and fluffy.

NOTE: this recipe is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD, like slap yo mama good, so save it for a time when you’re REALLY celebrating something, or apologizing to your boo or just showing off and NOT dieting, LOL! Happy baking…

Halloween FOTD: Z-Kitty

9 Nov

HEY Y’ALL! I know it’s been forever, but this was my FOTD for Halloween 2013. One of my friends threatened bodily harm if I refused to share it with you, so here I am… late as hell, but obediently sharing 😉 This look is very similar to the  Zeta Love FOTD, so if you haven’t seen it, you can watch that video here. I did use different products to achieve the look below, but the general concept is the same. Enough chatter… onto the makeup!

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I started by applying a piece of tape to the outer corners of my eyelid, for a nice, crisp line. Then I applied CS Hot Pot in Cornflower Blue (a matte light blue e/s) to my crease. The Cornflower Blue served as a transitional color to blend the deeper shades of blue into my skin color. Next I applied the darkest shade of blue, Indigo, to my outer v. Then I faded the e/s from dark to light, going towards my nose. From Indigo into Electric Blue, Electric Blue into Cornflower Blue and Cornflower Blue into Powder Pink (which is actually a matte white e/s with slight pink undertone). I blended the upper edge of my crease using Oatmeal Tan (a matte camel e/s). BTW, all of the aforementioned e/s are matte ones, from the Coastal Scents Hot Pots collection (pictured below). Finally I used the frosty champagne e/s from the L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional e/s quad in Canyon Stone to highlight my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used NYX Cosmetics Slim Lip pencil in Espresso (820) & a matte dark brown e/s from my 88 warm palette to fill in my eyebrows. Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal mascara in Glam Black on my lashes. I defined my upper lashline & waterline & created a wing on the inner & outer corners using a tiny liner brush dipped in Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black.

FACE: For spot correction I used, Ruby Kisses 3D face creator in Level 11. Then I dusted a light layer of L’oreal True Match Powder in Nut Brown (C7) over my face.

CHEEKS: Ulta single e/s in “Sparks” on the hollows of my cheeks & Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey on the apples. I dipped my finger into the frosty champagne e/s from the L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional e/s quad in Canyon Stone to highlight the highest part of my cheekbones.

LIPS: I filled in my lips using NYX Cosmetics Slim Lip pencil in Nude Beige (857) & topped it off with Femme Couture Super Juicies Lip Gloss in Creamy Pink.

Cattify Yoself Boo!

I did not record a video of the cattification process, but you can find a plethora of YT videos dedicated to this endeavor here. You’ll need a thin liner brush, some black cream or gel eyeliner w/ tremendous staying power & some black liquid eyeliner. I applied Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black to my nose using a liner brush. Then I dipped a sharpened pencil into the same eyeliner to create the whisker follicle dots. To create the whiskers I used Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Liner in Blackest Black. I purchased the blue leopard ears from Walmart for under $2 (last year). It came with a mask, but who needs that when you’ve got great makeup?! HINT: the time to buy Halloween supplies is the 1st week of November, so go make your preparations for next year. Por ejemplo, I nabbed an INCREDIBLE Mardi Gras-esque mask w/ peacock feathers & sequins for under $5. I’m not sure how I’ll use it yet, but the Mobilian in me just couldn’t say no.

FOTD: Election Fever

6 Nov

Not much to say about this one. I was feeling extremely patriotic this morning. That sentiment gave birth to a red, white & blue FOTD. Enjoy 😉

Notice something new? This is my “new” 28 pan of Coastal Scents Hot Pots. I will discuss it in greater detail in the near future.

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I applied Powder Pink Hot Pot (a matte white color with slight pink undertone) e/s to my entire lower eyelid. I used a mixture of Blue My Mind (a pearly royal blue) by Milani & Indigo Hot Pot (a matte royal blue) to define my crease. I used Electric Blue Hot Pot (matte true blue) to blend the outer edges of the blue crease. On my brow area I used Oatmeal Tan Hot Pot.

OTHER DETAILS… I used Palladio eyeliner pencil in Dark Brown (EL193) to fill in my eyebrows & L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black on my lashes. I defined my upper lashline & waterline using Sephora waterproof smoky cream liner in Must Have (matte black). I traced a thin line under my eye using the Milk pencil. I used a pencil brush to apply Vibrant Red Hot Pot (true red, matte finish) directly on top of Milk.

FACE: For spot correction I used, Ruby Kisses 3D face creator in Level 11. Then I dusted a light layer of Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05). I skipped blush.

Lipstick exploration…

5 Nov

Last weekend my bestie went to an 80s throwback party sporting this obnoxiously pink lipstick & believe it or not it was GORGE! She’d kill me if I posted the pic of her looking like a black Cyndi Lauper (sans the rainbow hair), so you’re just gonna hafta take my word for it. 😉 I’ve been kinda bored with my pout lately & I felt inspired by her willingness to try something new. So during my grocery run this afternoon, I copped a few new tubes of Wet N Wild Mega Last lip color.

914C Mocha-licious: a ruddy brown, halfway in between chocolate & berry

902C Bare it All : The perfect nude

Both lipsticks are very pigmented with buildable coverage, meaning you can either wear them sheer or saturated. They are really creamy & have a semi-matte formula. I like my lips to shine, so both of the following swatches were topped with Liplicious gloss in Frozen Daquiri (a sheer gloss w/ pink & silver sparkles).

914C / Mocha-licious

902C Bare it All

These lipsticks cost me $2 each & are available anywhere Wet N Wild Cosmetics are sold. I’m not a huge fan of Mocha-licious, but I’m gonna let it grow on me. I, however, INSTANTLY loved Bare it All. If you’re in the market for a nude lipstick, I encourage you to try it! Oh and for the brown-skinned girls who are intimidated by light colored lipstick: line your lips in a brown pencil prior to application, then smudge the lipstick into the liner & top with gloss. That’s what I did for the picture above. IT WORKS!

Steel Magnolias: Re-Boot Commencing in 5, 4, 3 …

7 Oct

I will definitely be tuning in!

Who’s watching Steel Magnolias tonight? I’ve never seen the original, but I’ve heard a lot about it over the many years since it debuted in 1989. I’ve also seen bits and pieces of it on TV and I know a little bit about the story. However, I’ve never watched the original from beginning to end. I’ll probably watch this reboot tonight though, just so that I can participate in the social media convos!! LOL!! Oh, and, Adepero is my sister’s college friend … so, you know, gotta support ;)!!
Well, hope some of you will be tuning in with me tonight! Steel Magnolias airs at 9 pm EST on Lifetime!!
