FOTD: Like there’s no tomorrow…

23 May

IDK about you, but I woke up knowing that 5/21/2011 @ 6pm (Eastern) couldn’t possibly be the rapture (click here for more info)… And since my salvation is already squared away & whatnot, I decided to do a funky look that I would have previously been too afraid to try! Hope you enjoy ūüôā

Tip of the day: If you’re not already doing so, start living like there’s no tomorrow… today!

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: Raspberry-colored cream eyeshadow from Claire’s 24  palette (on my lower lid) & WNW turquoise eyeliner on my crease

SHADOW: On my tear ducts I used golden yellow & I blended that into tangerine orange… then I blended the orange into magenta (all from Shany 120 palette).¬†I drew a line around my crease & outer v¬†with the turquoise WNW pencil.¬†Then using a crease brush, I blended the line & added turquoise eyeshadow to the crease & outer v. As always, I used matte camel from WNW Vanity on my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline with WetnWild cream eyeliner in black. On my waterline I repeated the turquoise eyeliner & eyeshadow from my eyelid for continuity.

LIPS: Carmex + ‚ÄúStop Violence in the Home‚ÄĚ lip gloss¬†by The Body Shop

CHEEKS: Ulta single e/s in Sparks in the hollows of my cheeks & Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey (8305B) on the apples of my cheeks

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

Celebrity Looks: Purple Eye

21 May

Don‚Äôt you just love the color PURPLE?! (while I love that movie, I’m referring to the actual color itself… LOL) It‚Äôs feminine, yet strong‚Ķ regal, yet accessible. Purple eye makeup is unique in that it can accentuate every eye color & any complexion. There are so many different shades of purple in the color spectrum & a wide variety of makeup options choose from (purple eyeshadow, pigments, glitters, eyeliners, even mascaras) you can definitely find something purple that looks good on you! So if you haven‚Äôt already, please give purple a try! *DISMOUNTS SOAPBOX & TOSSES MICROPHONE*

DO THE PRETTY GIRL ROCK! I love Keri Hilson’s purple smoky eye with black eyeliner & golden sparkles along her tearducts… Notice the way it makes her hazel eyes POP?

Tyra’s neutral makeup compliments her shimmery lavender eyeshadow superbly… *taking notes*

Rachel McAdams looks fresh as a lilac in her understated purple makeup.

Thandie Newton is minimalist in this version of the purple smoky eye… To re-create it smudge purple eyeshadow on your eyelid & waterline, line your upper lashine in black eyeliner, add mascara & GO!

I saw this photo in an Ulta sale paper & fell in love with their interpretation of a purple smoky eye… it’s smoky, yet spring-timey all at once!

Rihanna keeps it punk-tastic with her matte eyeshadow in electric violet!

So we’re not exactly celebrities, but we are wearing purple! My brother & were I up to our usual shenanigans on Resurrection Sunday… we were trying to create our own version of the Stepbrothers DVD cover… LOL!

Stay tuned for my interpretation of the purple eye…

FOTD: the Starry-eyed girl

20 May

This is my version of a blue smoky eye. It’s kinda on the steel blue/ dark gray side with both metallic sheen & glitter particles (yeah, I was doin’ the most). Today I used this sparkly navy blue e/s that I purchased @ Victoria’s Secret one day when I was bra shopping with my besties. I walked past the VS makeup display & I couldn’t leave empty-handed. I’m all about glitter & sparkles, so I was sold on that aspect alone. This e/s however, lacks the staying power of several cheaper brands *WHOMP WHOMP* BTW… my soul is vexed by the fact that you can’t really see the sparkles in these pics (but I promise you it was there)!

My tips for doing a smoky eye are as follows:

  1. Use a dark base (black, blue, gray or purple).
  2. Keep light and/or pastel colors restricted to your tearducts & brow bone.
  3. Keep the color below your crease & use something neutral under your brow (or risk looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show… GOOGLE IT!).
  4. Use mascara or false lashes, so that your lashes don’t get lost in the mix.
  5. DO NOT neglect the area under your eye! Put some black, gray or blue eyeliner on your waterline. You can even use a pencil or liner brush to apply e/s under your eyes if you’re going the extra mile!
  6. If you have fallout from all the dark colors you’ve applied to your eyelid, brush it away, then add some concealer + pressed powder under your eye… DARK CIRCLES are no one’s friend!

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: Cream shadow from the Claire’s 24 palette in Steel blue

SHADOW:¬†On my tearducts¬†I used a matte¬†off white (WNW Vanity). I blended that into Victoria’s Secret Silky Sparkle¬†in “Spin” (a sparkly grayish-blue) on the center of my¬†lower lid, then I used shimmery navy blue from the L‚ÄôOreal¬†Studio Secrets Professional Color Smokes in “Cobalt Smokes” to deepen my crease/ outer v. I also used matte off white (WNW Vanity) to highlight my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS‚Ķ I used CoverGirl¬†single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L‚ÄôOreal Collagen Mascara¬†in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. And that’s it! I was running late this morning & completely forgot my eyeliner… it looks so naked under my eye ūüė¶

LIPS:¬†Carmex¬†& L’Oreal HIP lip gloss in Inviting

CHEEKS: Ulta single e/s in Sparks in the hollows of my cheeks & Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey (8305B) on the apples of my cheeks

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

  Hold the phone!

What happened here? It looks like I got into a fight & lost, LOL. This e/s didn’t make it past lunch with both a primer & cream base, THAT constitutes EPIC failure in my book… On to the next one!

Celeb Looks: Smoky Blue

19 May

These pics are living proof that blue eyeshadow makes brown eyes pop & face it folks:¬†smoky eyes are just plain sexy. What’s not to love?! There are many ways to achieve a blue smoky eye,¬†these are just a few examples… ENJOY!

Solange is smoking hot in a bluish-gray that extends to her lower lashline & look-at-me lashes! NOTE: When you wear subtle colors on your lips & face, your eyes take center stage!

This look demonstrates a linear gradation of blue to gray, using eyeshadows w/ shimmer finish & a nude lip. BTW, I'm LOVING the contour & highlight on her cheeks!

Beyoncé keeps it simple w/ this monochromatic smoky eye in sapphire blue (matte finish), peachy blush & sheer pink lip gloss.

Tyra looks positively "FEE-US" in this navy smoky eye & bold berry lips! I LOVE IT! BTW, I need these earrings AND this hairdo... LOL

¬†¬†Stay tuned for my interpretation of the smoky blue look…¬†

Tip of the day: Clock it!

11 May

This tip of the day was inspired by a FB dialogue I had with one of my friends this morning. She finds herself waking up extra early so that she can do her makeup before work. I used to have this problem myself; there didn’t seem to be enough time for a my makeup & hair in addition to normal morning things (such as bathing, ironing my clothes & eating breakfast, LOL). So last December I asked Santa for a wall clock & I mounted it directly next my vanity in the bathroom(slightly above eye level, cuz I’m only 5’3)¬†. It still takes me about 100 minutes to get ready for work, but now I have my eye on the clock the entire time. If you’re a perfectionist (like me :()… stop running late everywhere & buy yourself a clock! Time management will also help you¬†measure your¬†dexterity in a particular task. Case in point: it used to take me 60 minutes to roll my hair (wet) & now I can do it in 35. I know I’m a deft & speedy¬†roller setter because of… MY BELOVED CLOCK!

This is my Better Homes & Gardens 10″ Scroll Wall Clock from Walmart ūüôā Ain’t it cute?

FOTD: Greens & Blues

8 May

¬†Greens & blues eyes are some of my favorite looks… Hope you enjoy this one ūüôā

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: On my tearduct I used pastel green, then I blended that into an apple-y green (both from Shany 120 palette) & on my outer lid I used blue from the CoverGirl Tropical Fusion palette. Then I went back in with an aqua-colored shadow (Shany) to help blend the green into blue over the center of my eyelid. I finished with matte camel e/s (WetNWild Vanity) under my browbone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my waterline with a WetnWild Eyeliner Pencil in turquoise & added both blue & green e/s (Shany) directly on top of the line using a pencil brush for added drama.

LIPS: Carmex + L’Oreal HIP lip gloss in Inviting

CHEEKS:¬†WetNWild¬†Blush in ‚ÄúHeather Silk‚ÄĚ (on the apples of my cheeks) & Ulta single e/s in Sparks (in the hollows of my cheeks)

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

Tip of the day: If you have allergies or stayed up too late last night, your eyes might look dull &/or red in the morning. Wearing blue or green eyeshadow can accentuate redness & draw negative attention to your lovely peepers. To hydrate my allergy eyes & reduce redness, I use a couple of drops of Opcon-A eye drops before I put on my makeup. It makes them bright white & relieves the itch. NOTE: There are numerous brands of eyedrops designed to do this task, Opcon-A just happens to be the one I prefer.

It’s that time again… HAIRWASHING DAY!!!

6 May

In case you were wondering, today was hair washing day! I just thought I’d share my process with you. Consider yourself honored to gaze upon my mug sans makeup… few people have had the privilege. Hahahaha! ENJOY

PRE POO

I’m kinda ol skool in that I still scratch my scalp before I wash my hair. What can I say? Shampoo is more effective after debris has been manually removed from the surface of your scalp. I parted my hair, scratched the scalp & applied a thin line of Tea Tree Oil.  After my entire scalp was covered in oil, I applied Head & Shoulders dry scalp conditioner to the length of my hair & let it sit for about 15 minutes prior to washing my hair.

Tip of the day: The surfactants in your shampoo (& conditioner) cleanse your hair by attracting & suspending dirt, dander & debris, so that they can easily be rinsed away with water. However, they require a little bit of manual friction to get the process going. If you’re dissatisfied with the performance of your shampoo, it could be that you need to put more elbow grease into your routine. DO NOT scrub your scalp until it bleeds (LOL)… just until it feels clean!

SHAMPOO

I poured a little less than a teaspoon of Head & Shoulders classic clean shampoo into a small (empty) bottle, filled it the rest of the way with water & shook it up. I used this diluted shampoo solution to wash my hair… poured it directly onto my parted scalp, scrubbed & rinsed until it was clean.

DEEP CONDITION

My grand debut of Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Replenishing Mask (YAY)!!! After towel drying my hair, I applied the treatment in sections until my entire head was covered. Then I detangled my hair in sections (using my TANGLE TEEZER), covered it with a plastic baggie & sat under the dryer (low heat) for 20 minutes & rinsed it out. My thoughts on this mask?!? I like it fine; unfortunately it’s no more spectacular than any other mask that I’ve tried. It smells amazing & provided excellent slip for detangling. I was a bit heavy-handed with it & used half the jar in one day on my shoulder length hair (SMH)… but I like it, so I’d buy it again.

ROLLER SETTING

I divided my hair into about 5 sections, added product & rolled it up (back to front). TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray, African Pride Leave-In Conditioner & The Body Shop‚Äôs Macadamia straightening balm. In a spray bottle I combined equal parts water & African-Pride Leave-In. I did this because I prefer soft hold & it can make your hair hard, not to mention sticky, if left undiluted. I applied all three products to each section of hair before rolling. I used 1‚ÄĚ diameter rollers on the majority of my head & 1 ¬ľ‚ÄĚ diameter rollers in the very back where my hair is longer. I roll my hair towards the back of my head, so the curls roll under.

FINISHED PRODUCT

¬†After rolling my hair, I sat under the dryer for about 2 hours (low heat). I let my hair cool off before removing the¬†rollers. I applied¬†coconut oil to each section & this is how it turned out…

I haven’t decided how I’m gonna style it yet… I’ll post those pics later this weekend… HAPPY FRIDAY!

FOTD: Perpetual peach & purple

3 May

I was worried that y’all might get tired of green looks, so I decided to mix it up a little bit. Peach, purple & turquoise are an unusual combination, but it looks fresh & spring-timey, so I was pleased with how it turned out.¬†ENJOY! ūüôā

Tip of the day:¬†Lip glosses, especially sparkly & shimmery¬†ones,¬†can be very drying. For this reason, I usually wear some carmex¬†under my lip gloss. I also keep a tube of carmex¬†by the bed & put some on every night before I go to sleep. Try it out with your favorite chapstick¬†or moisturizer. Who doesn’t love waking up to a kissable pout?!

PRIMER: Urban Decay e/s Primer Potion

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil: Milk

SHADOW:  I covered the inner two-thirds of my lower lid in golden peach e/s (from the CoverGirl Tropical Fusion palette). On my outer v area I used dark purple from Estee Lauder Black Moon e/s quad & sparkly black from the CoverGirl Dazzling Metallics palette. I used matte camel from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette from my crease all the way to my browbone. For added interest, I went back in & added pale shimmery gold from the CoverGirl Golden Sunset palette.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I lined my waterline with We tn Wild Eyeliner Pencil in Turquoise.

LIPS: Carmex & Estee Lauder lip gloss in Rose

CHEEKS: Ulta single e/s in Sparks (to contour the hollows of my cheeks)

FACE: Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep (05)

FOTD: Twilight @ sunset

1 May
June 2010

If I look a little different in this FOTD, it’s because it was taken almost a year ago (yeah, I’ve been a junkie for a minute). It’s one of my favorites because I love the way the sunlight shines through my living room at sunset & because Twilight (by Ulta) is probably my favorite eyeshadow. It’s a metallic pewtery¬†gray, neither too dark nor too light, so it looks good on a variety of skin tones. If you’d like to try it out, now’s a good time to buy.¬†ALL ULTA BRAND cosmetics, brushes & beauty tools are on sale, BUY ONE GET ONE FREE until May 8th! I LOVE a good sale!!! And in case you’re wondering, I am not being paid to endorse this product, I genuinely like it.

June 2010

Tip of the day:¬†In this look I used black as a base for my shadow & by doing this you can create a more sultry look, even if you’re not using colors that are particularly dark. When used underneath a shimmery or metallic shadow, a black base will enhance sheen… when used in concert with a jewel toned shadow, a black base gives more depth.

PRIMER: Urban Decay e/s primer potion

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Black Bean

SHADOW: I used Ulta single e/s in Twilight on the inner two-thirds of my lower eyelid, blue from the CoverGirl Tropical Fusion e/s palette to accentuate my crease & outer v & pressed powder (see below) on my upper lid & all the way up to my browbone. After that I went back in & added champagne from the CoverGirl Shimmering Sands trio to highlight my tearducts.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows. Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I lined my waterline with WetnWild Eyeliner Pencil in Black.

LIPS: Carmex

FACE:¬†L’Oreal¬†True Match pressed powder in Nut Brown (C7)
