LOVES the volume after a fresh wash!

LOVES the volume after a fresh wash!

I’ve recently received a few inquiries about my Winter 2014 hair regimen. Here’s what I’ve been doing this winter to keep my wig looking right.

STEP 1 – Wipe the slate clean…

  • (Biweekly) I scratch my¬†scalp & shampoo my hair,
  • Deep condition & detangle,
  • Put on a plastic bag & sit under hooded dryer (on low heat)¬†for about 15 minutes,
  • Rinse conditioner¬†out w/ cold water,
  • Wrap a t-shirt around my hair (in a turban fashion)¬†to dry

STEP 2 – Roller Set…

  • I spray a light mist of TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray
  • I mix Mango-scented Shea Butter & The Body Shop Macadamia straightening balm¬†& apply it to each section of hair. This smoothes & seals my cuticles, minimizing my friz.¬†I know what you’re gonna say… “Sham hasn’t that product been discontinued?” And my reponse would be “Yes, it has!” However, since¬†2011 I have bought several bottles from various eBay retailers, so I intend to keep using it until I can no longer replenish my stash! ūüėČ
  • I apply my FAVORITE leave-in solution (a 50/50 mix of H2O & African-Pride Leave-In Conditioner) to each section of hair before rolling it up.
  • I sit under my hooded dryer, alternating between low & high heat until my wig is completely dry. This process generally takes about 2 hours.
  • I remove the rollers & use a paddle brush to wrap my hair before tying it down & going to sleep.

STEP 3 – Style…

  • After removing my scarf, I mist a little bit of shine spray, then fluff & seperate my curls.
  • I smoothe my edges using a touch of Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade (as needed).

STEP 4 – Maintain…

  • Nighttime routine: I alternate between wrapping & dry rolling my hair
  • On rainy days, like today, I bun it up to keep it stretched & to prevent my curls from reverting.

    My rainy day bun

BOTTOM LINE: My 2014 hair regimen isn’t at that different from that of two years ago. The main difference is that I use a bit less heat now. Whereas before I was ALL ABOUT straightening my roots, I have chilled out with that. My hair is longer than it was back then, so it actually hangs differently. In a nutshell, longer hair = more¬†elongated curls, so when you add flat-ironed your roots to the equation, you end up with ZERO volume ūüė¶ Additionally, actively sectioning &¬†straightening curly/puffy roots is¬†time consuming, I prefer more passive methods of acheiving smooth edges.¬†For me, the¬†tension from wrapping and/or bunning my hair is usually just enough to give the appearance of a sleek hairline.

What are you doing this winter to keep your wig looking tight?

Happy Nappiversary Giovanni!!!

What’s going on with my wig?

I know they look more like coils, but this is a four day old flexi-rod set. For some reason my curls tend to get tighter over time, instead of staying the same diameter as the original rod. Anyway, my edges were fuzzy, so I brushed & smoothed em using Ecostyler Olive Oil gel. Then I secured it with a banana clip.

Product Review: Queen Helene Royal Curl Shaping Cr√©me

5 Jun

As I stated in my Jan/Feb Acquisitions video, I love this stuff. I bought this 15 ounce jar at my local Earth Fare for just under $8. I’ve seen Royal Curl Curl Shaping Cr√©me recently at my local BSS & Tarjay, so it’s fairly easy to find. It claims to be “all natural” which isn’t entirely true (see the ingredients list below). However, it is alcohol, sulfate, petrolatum, paraben & phthalate free! WOOT WOOT! It promises to tame frizz, define curls, smooth waves with silky hold, quench your hair‚Äôs thirst (without grease) & defend against heat & humidity. It smells ridiculously sweet, like a pack of Tropical Starbursts… YUM! I love sweet-smelling hair products, so this is one of my favorite features. If you’re conservative in that area, you probably won’t be a fan.

Royal Curl has the consistency of grape jelly

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Pectin, Agave Rigida (Sisal) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Royal Jelly Extract, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, Fragrance (Parfum).

I used this product on dry hair (twist n curl) & had underwhelming results…

But the directions explicitly state that this product should be used on wet hair. Reading is fundamental y’all. I did a twist-out on damp/wet hair & had much better results…

I have also used Royal Curl to shingle & coil Giovanni with great results. Although this is an overall great product, I do have a few gripes. I read several product reviews in which the curly girl used this product to smooth her edges. It did NOTHING of the sort for me. I’m sure you could use it to smooth down a puff/bun/ponytail, but doubt I’d use it that way (unless it was close to hairwashing day) because this product has the tendency to build up. Anyway, I needed to smooth the edges of my twists, so I used Ecostyler olive oil gel, which brings me to my next complaint… Royal Curl does not play nice w/ Ecostyle gel or coconut oil. It left tiny white flakes in my hair on two separate occasions. Next gripe: this product is extremely sticky. After my hair was dry I had to use a hot washcloth to remove the tacky residue from my face/neck/ears. But once my curls were set, I enjoyed a flexible, crunch-free hold.

NOTE: Because wet hair is susceptible to shrinkage & you must use Royal Curl on wet hair, this is not a product that will help elongate your curls. But if you’re seeking a sweet-smelling humectant, you should definitely give it a try.

This look incorporates three of my favorite things in life: blues, greens & the all important CUT CREASE! Enjoy… ūüôā

I used the sparkly white (Pride palette) to highlight the inner corner of my eyelids.

Hey Giovanni!

I washed, conditioned, detangled & air-dried my hair prior to twisting. I made about 18 twists using Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk. These pics are of my 2nd day hair.

Hair update

26 Feb

This time last year, I was roller setting my hair using 1″ diameter rollers (pink) in the front & 1.5″ (orangey) in the back…

Then my hair grew out some, so I graduated to all 1.5″ diameter rollers (yellow & orangey) w/ a few 1.75″ (peach) sprinkled here & there…

I didn’t have enough 1.75″ rollers to cover my entire head, so the other day I went to the BSS & bought a few more. They didn’t have any peach ones left, so I bought 2 packs of purple ($2 for a pack of 6 rollers). My hair is even longer, so I decided it set everything on the jumbo rollers… After my hair was dry, I flat ironed it & threw the rollers back in to preserve some degree of body & curl. Then I wrapped it & tied it w/ a scarf. This is how it looked when I set free…

My thoughts? Roller setting was & is still MY THANG! It’s my favorite & most trusted hair move. But I’ve noticed that it’s taking longer & longer for my hair to dry these days.¬†Barring any excessive damage/breakage, it will eventually become too long to style in this manner. It makes me sad just thinking about it, but I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it…

Weekend shenanigans & FOTD: Soft Sable

13 Feb

I went to the movies & had dinner at Panera Bread Co with my mama (she’s the best)! I absolutely LOVE scary movies, so we saw The Woman in Black. My thoughts? It wasn’t nearly as scary as it could or should have been (hence the rating of PG-13) *YAWN*¬†As I sat in the theater munching on my contraband trail mix¬†(because movie theater¬†snacks are¬†ridiculously expensive & high in both fat & sodium) I noticed that there was an overabundance of people half¬†my age, giggling, play-fighting & playing musical chairs all up¬†in the theater. What the &*%@?! We purposefully attended¬†the matin√©e show to take advantage of the lower-priced tickets & the vacant stadium seating, but no… the darn TEENAGERS were there to see their beloved Harry Potter all grown up. I feel so old right now. *SIGHS* Anyway, I’ve been experimenting with smoky eyes lately & this is what I came up with…Subtlety is not my strong suit, but today’s look is a simple, dark brown smoky eye. The flash from my camera made the brown appear lighter¬†than it did in person. This is a more accurate depiction. My shiny happy wig is the result of finger coils, created using KCKT & organic extra virgin coconut oil. Do you see those 2 twists on the right side? That hair WILL. NOT. COIL. I don’t know why, but no amount of¬† baby talk, gel, water, kind words, conditioner, oil or sweet nothings¬†will make that hair curl. *WHOMP¬†WHOMP*

PRIMER: NYX HD e/s base

BASE: NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk

SHADOW: I applied matte dark brown from the Wet N Wild Vanity palette over my entire lower eyelid. On my crease I used matte brown from the CoverGirl Coffee Shop palette (a slightly lighter shade than the first one). For a softer, more natural look, I used Estee Lauder pressed powder in Deep on my brow bone.

OTHER DETAILS… I used CoverGirl single e/s in Smolder to define my eyebrows & L’Oreal Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black on my eyelashes. I defined my upper lashline & waterline with Wet N Wild cream liner in black.

CHEEKS: Black Radiance sheer finish blush in Soft Honey
