My Deep Conditioner

25 Sep

During the majority of my transition, my go to deep conditioner was Pantene Relaxed and Natural Breakage Defense Deep Conditioning Mask. It provides excellent slip for detangling, smells heavenly, is extremely affordable @ $6 for a 7.6 ounce jar & made Giovanni feel like BUTTAH. The only problem is that I could NEVER find it in stock ūüė¶ Pantene was trippin when they discontinued it. Google it to see for yourself; the natural hair community was both horrified & outraged *insert TEARS*After that I searched frantically for a replacement DC. I found ones that smelled good, but had minimal slip… or ones that conditioned well, but they smelled like broccoli & cabbage puree or they cost $18 a jar. So I decided to “make” my own, which I playfully refer to¬† as my “hair crack” after Queen Latifah’s mystery concoction on the movie Beauty Shop ūüôā

After reading CurlyNikki’s review of Lustrasilk Shea Butter & Mango Cholesterol Plus, I bought a 20 ounce jar @ my local BSS for under $5. It was to be the base product for my DC. To it I added an entire bottle of VO5 Moisture Milks Passion Fruit Smoothie Conditioner to the mix ($1 for a 15 ounce bottle @ my local Dollar Tree). During a Sally’s PJ run, someone recommended Wild Growth Hair Oil, so I bought a 6 ounce bottle for $7.99. The stuff is amazing, but it smells like 47-year-old bacon grease *GAGS* So I added about 3 ounces of this oil to my DC, cuz I knew I’d probably never use it otherwise. That wasn’t enough oil for this massive quantity of conditioner, so I added a couple of tablespoons of organic virgin coconut oil & about 3 ounces of Africa’s Best Ultimate Herbal oil. I also added the leavins of whatever bottles of conditioner were in my cabinet at the time (Herbal Essence Hello Hydration & Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Fortifying Cream Conditioner, to name a few). To make it smell pretty, I added a couple drops of Monkey Farts fragrance oil. YES, that’s the real name of this oil! I bought a 2 ounce bottle for $3 at CoastalScents.com. It has a wonderful tropical smell, but it’s VERY concentrated, so use it sparingly. Finally I bought plastic jars from the Dollar Tree & filled them with my DC.

I know what you’re thinking “you spent over $30 Shamicka!!!” True, but I ended up with about 50 ounces of product. When you do the math, that’s 60 cents per ounce of DC! I’ve been using it off & on since March 2011 & I had enough excess to share with some friends.

What do you use to DC?

I found Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Replenishing Mask back in May during a PJ run to Ulta… I used the last of it a month or 2 ago. Once I use up my hair crack, I’ll probably buy another jar of that… unless something new catches my eye between now & then, LOL!

Yeah, light-weight moisturizers are great, but sometimes you have to reapply them to maintain the effect.

BTW I tried Aussie 3 Minute Miracle DC… it is THE BUSINESS!
